What is Android?

Initially Android founded by Andy Rubin in October 2003 and later acquired by Google on August 17, 2005. 
Android is a free  Linux based operating system for mobile devices such as tablet computers and smartphones. It was originally developed by  Google  and released on November 5, 2007 , for mobile platforms and later the OHA (Open Handset Alliance).
Java language is mainly used to write the android code even though other languages can be used
The T-Mobile's G1 phone (HTC Dream) is the first phone to be released to the public with Google Android on September 23, 2008.
The goal of android project is to create a successful real-world product that improves the mobile experience for end users.

What is Open Handset Alliance (OHA)
It's a consortium of 84 companies such as google, samsung, AKM, synaptics, KDDI, Garmin, Teleca, Ebay, Intel etc.

It was established on 5th November, 2007, led by Google. It is committed to advance open standards, provide services and deploy handsets using the Android Platform.
